QVC and HSN Shipping, Returns and Restocking: The Fine Print That Changes the Real Price

Shipping and returns are where a good-looking shopping-channel price quietly turns into an average one. Neither network hides the terms, but neither puts them next to the number you are looking at either.
What does shipping actually cost on each network?
It varies by item, not by network, which is why a blanket rule is useless here. On September 7, 2026, QVC's daily deal shipped free on standard service while HSN's charged $5.50.
Scale matters more than the figure. On a $199.98 vacuum, $5.50 would be 2.7% of the price; on a $59.99 purifier pair, it is 9.2%. Cheap items are where shipping does the real damage to a comparison.
How long do you have to send something back?
Both networks publish a 30-day window. QVC counts from the date you received the package, and HSN's public line is the same period with free exchanges for a different size or colour.
Thirty days is shorter than several mainstream retailers offer on the same categories, which is worth weighing when a marketplace price is only a few dollars higher.
What comes off the refund?
This is the number nobody quotes on air. QVC's help centre states that a refund covers the purchase price minus the shipping and handling you paid and a Q Return Label fee.
So a free-shipping TSV that you send back is not a free round trip: the label fee still applies. The exception is meaningful — if the item is defective, if QVC made the error, or if you are requesting an exchange or replacement, QVC refunds the shipping and handling and does not deduct the label fee.
How do you build a real delivered price?
Start from the item price and add the quoted shipping. That gives you the outlay, and it is the only figure worth putting next to a rival retailer's total.
Then add a risk line if you are unsure about the purchase. If there is a realistic chance you send it back, the deductions above are a cost of trying the item, and they belong in the comparison rather than in the surprise column later.

Does the free-shipping promotion change the return math?
Only in your favour on the way out. A site-wide free shipping event removes the outbound charge, which is the deduction most people forget is coming off a refund.
It does nothing to the return label, though. If you buy three sizes intending to keep one, the label fee applies to each parcel you send back, and that is the scenario where channel shopping gets expensive.
Is a restocking fee ever charged?
Neither network's published policy on the pages we read describes a percentage restocking fee on standard consumer returns. The deduction is framed as shipping and the return label rather than a restocking charge.
Large or freight-delivered items are the category to read carefully. Mattresses, furniture and heavy appliances usually carry their own delivery and collection terms on the item page, and those override the general policy.
What about exchanges rather than refunds?
Exchanges are the better deal on both networks, and that is deliberate. HSN advertises free exchange shipping for a size or colour swap, and QVC waives its shipping deduction and label fee when the return is an exchange or replacement request.
If the item is right but the size is wrong, exchange rather than refund and rebuy. The rebuy route pays the deductions twice.
When does the fine print flip a buying decision?
It flips most often on clothing and shoes, where the return rate is high and the price gap is small. A $5 saving on the channel disappears the first time a pair goes back.
It flips least on sealed electronics you have already decided on, where free standard shipping and an interest-free split can make the channel the cheapest route outright. FAQ
Is return shipping free? Not on a standard change-of-mind return at QVC, where a return label fee is deducted. It is free on HSN exchanges for a different size or colour.
Do I get the original shipping back? Only when the item is defective, the network made an error, or you are exchanging. Otherwise it is deducted from the refund.
How long does a refund take? Both networks process on receipt at their warehouse, so allow transit time on top of the 30-day window. Start the return early rather than on day 29.
Can I return an on-air exclusive? Channel-exclusive models follow the same policy as any other item. After the window closes, service moves to the manufacturer.
Does tax get refunded? Sales tax follows the refunded amount. It is applied at checkout and reversed with the refund.
